FROM THE SWAMP TO YONKERS? NY SENATOR MAKES PITCH FOR JETS

The Jets "will have a place" for a stadium in Yonkers,
NY, if state Senator Nick Spano "has anything to say about
[it]," according to Jesse Holland of the AP. Spano
yesterday wrote a letter to Jets Owner Robert Wood Johnson
IV and "asked him to think about" moving the team to the
Yonkers Raceway, which has 97 acres of land. Spano: "It's
feasible, it's accessible and it's available." Holland
notes that Yonkers Raceway is owned by Steelers Owner Art
Rooney. Spano is also "trying to recruit" Gov. George
Pataki to "his cause" (AP, 1/20).
N.Y. STATE OF MIND: NEWSDAY's Steve Zipay wrote that
NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue "supported" a stadium
proposal by Mets co-Owner Fred Wilpon in which the Jets
would play in a "new" Shea Stadium. Tagliabue, on the
proposed stadium, which would cost between $400-500M: "I
think it would be much better if the Jets had their own
facility ... here in the [area]" (NEWSDAY, 1/19).
