REDSKINS SET TO BUY US AIRWAYS ARENA? SNYDER WON'T SAY

The Redskins "are negotiating to purchase" US Airways
Arena and its surrounding land and "would consider" moving
Redskin Park, the team's practice facility, there "if the
deal is completed," according to Mark Maske of the
WASHINGTON POST. Sources say the deal "could be worth as
much as" $50M and "would solve several problems" for
Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder because it would enable the
team to own additional parking spots near FedEx Field, and
"perhaps would provide" Snyder with a facility in which his
AFL team "eventually" could play. Through a spokesperson,
Snyder "declined comment" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/20).
CHARITABLE CAMPAIGN: In DC, Paul Schwartzman reports
that the Redskins are "teaming up with corporate groups" to
launch a charitable campaign to donate $1M "or more" a year
to community groups in the metropolitan area. The
organization, called the Washington Redskins Leadership
Council, was set up to "oversee the contributions."
Redskins President Stephen Baldacci said that FedEx,
Dominion Resources and Arthur Andersen are among the
corporations that will sit on the council. The council has
raised $560,000 and is "hoping to draw an additional"
$800,000 this year (WASHINGTON POST, 1/20).
