The Showdown at Sherwood II, featuring Tiger Woods and
a "yet-to-be-named" challenger, "is in the conceptual
stages," according to the "Forecaddie" in GOLFWEEK. Woods'
agent, IMG's Mark Steinberg, said that "he doesn't foresee
any serious objection from the PGA Tour, which has the
rights of approval." But the "Forecaddie" cites "rumblings"
that PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and other Tour execs
"have a few reservations about blessing the event,"
especially if it is moved to a date that would fall earlier
this season. Steinberg said "it will be easier to pull off"
this year's event "because it turned out to be a good prime-
time showcase" last year. The "Forecaddie": "Gee, just a
stab in the dark, but if it's not Tiger-Duval II, think
Sergio Garcia might be a candidate?" (GOLFWEEK, 1/15 issue).
SPREADING THE GOODWILL TO CALGARY: In Toronto, William
Houston reports that Calgary "will be officially announced
next month" as host city of the 2005 Winter Goodwill Games.
Turner Sports Exec and Goodwill Games President Michael
Plant "met quietly with officials in Calgary a few weeks ago
to solidify the deal." The Games' projected budget is in
the C$50M range (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 1/18).
