SLOC TURNS DOWN APPEAL TO VIEW SPONSOR INFO; RETAINS FIRM

Salt Lake City doctor and anti-alcohol activist George
Van Komen "lost the first battle" in "seeking information"
from the SLOC when he "was denied a copy" of Anheuser-
Busch's contract to sponsor the 2002 Games, according to
Lisa Riley Roche of the DESERET NEWS. The SLOC said that
all sponsorship contracts are "confidential," but Van Komen
has stated that A-B "should be treated differently because
providing beer as part of the deal makes it a public safety
issue." USOC Exec Dir Dick Schultz said that A-B is "not
asking" to change Utah's liquor laws (DESERET NEWS, 1/13).
RE-AFFIRMING THE FIRM: In Salt Lake City, Mike Gorrell
reports that the SLOC will keep its legal counsel Ray,
Quinney & Nebeker, after Games trustees accepted "the firm's
explanation that it had not destroyed primary documents
pertinent" to the Salt Lake City bid scandal. Firm attorney
-- and secretary of the Olympic bid -- Jim Jardine "offered
a detailed explanation of how some bid-era documents were
     shredded" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 1/14).
