MEDIA NOTES

TV MONITOR: Last night's 11:00pm ET editions of
     CNN/SI's "Sports Tonight," ESPN's "SportsCenter," and FSN's
"Primetime" all led with Cowboys-Vikings, followed by
Dolphins-Seahawks. The first non-NFL story on all three
shows was Tiger Woods' fifth straight PGA Tour win at the
Mercedes Championship, at 7:41 into "Sports Tonight," 9:58
into "SportsCenter," and 13:45 into "Primetime" (THE DAILY).
ONLINE: In N.Y., Rachel Scheier profiles UltraStar,
which will provide Internet service through Yankees Xtreme
starting next month for $14.95 a month. Fans with their own
Internet service will be offered all the features of the
site without the Internet service for $5.95 a month (N.Y.
DAILY NEWS, 1/10)....In N.Y., technology writer Matt Richtel
examined whether the Internet can "compete against the wily
old veteran television for the hearts and minds of sports
fans." After testing out many real-time sites during live
games, Richtel "concluded that the Internet simply isn't
ready to play in the big leagues" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/9).
NOTES: In Sacramento, Jim Van Vliet reported that TNT
has added two more NBA Kings games to its national schedule.
Turner Sports Publicist Tamara Gehris said that the five
Kings games shown by Turner so far this season have
attracted an average 9% "more households than the other
games it has shown" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 1/9)....In L.A.,
Elizabeth Jensen profiled Lifetime TV and the start-up of
women-based cable channel Oxygen Media. Jensen wrote that
the role of women's sports at Lifetime "is up in the air,
with the disappointing ratings for the network's pro
basketball telecasts." But Lifetime President & CEO Carole
Black does see value in sports role models showing women
"overcoming enormous obstacles" (L.A. TIMES, 1/9).
