CBC DENIES BLUE JAYS WILL BE CUT DUE TO NEW REGULATIONS

The CBC "intends to keep" the Blue Jays in its
programming lineup, but there are "no guarantees" that fans
will continue to get 40 games per season, according to Chris
Zelkovich of the TORONTO STAR. Following a "directive" by
the Canadian Radio-TV and Telecom Commission (CRTC) to
reduce its sports programming (See THE DAILY, 1/7), CBC Exec
Dir of Sports Nancy Lee "wouldn't speculate" where the
programming cuts would occur, and denied speculation that
the move leaves Blue Jays broadcasts "extremely vulnerable."
Lee: "We may not be able to do 40 or 50 games a year but
baseball will be part of CBC." Lee "hinted" that
programming changes "might involve nips and tucks on a
variety of sports rather than radical surgery on entire
schedules." Lee: "We are committed to hockey, but that
doesn't mean we can't reduce the number of hockey games we
carry." Lee said that she'd be "loath" to cut events like
pro figure skating and said that she would "prefer to see
more women's pro golf on the network" (TORONTO STAR, 1/9).
