A 180-DEGREE TURN ... BALLPARK SUPPORT WAVERING FOR PADRES

A new poll shows that "public opinion regarding the
Padres ballpark and redevelopment project has flipped upside
down," according to Gerry Braun of the SAN DIEGO UNION-
TRIBUNE, who reported that 59% of voters "now oppose using
public money to build a new ballpark." The San Diego Union-
Tribune/NBC poll of 559 registered voters was conducted by
telephone between November 29-December 1 by the Social
Sciences Research Laboratory at San Diego State Univ. The
poll showed that the "large majority" is "nearly as large as
the one that approved" the Prop. C ballpark initiative in
November '98. The poll showed that "only" 26% of voters now
feel that they "would favor" Prop. C, compared to 60% when
Prop. C passed in '98. Meanwhile, 40% of voters viewed
Padres Owner John Moores favorably, while 19% viewed him
unfavorably and 4% viewed him "both favorably and
unfavorably." Chargers Owner Alex Spanos was viewed
favorably by 32%, unfavorably by 25% and both favorably and
     unfavorably by 5% (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 12/18).
