FRANCHISE NOTES

MLB: In Boston, Will McDonough wrote that an MLB
owners' financial report showed "that only eight teams made
money" last season. The Red Sox "were credited with a
profit of" $5M because they reached the ALCS, but "in
reality, the team broke even because it never received the
more than $5 million it was owed by its local television
broadcaster," JCS New England. The team "will file a lawsuit
to try to recoup some of that money" (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/18).
...In Minneapolis, Sid Hartman wrote that Twins Owner Carl
Pohlad "is no longer even hinting about moving the team"
after the failed St. Paul stadium vote. Pohlad: "The club
is not for sale. If somebody came up with an interesting
offer, we would listen" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 12/19).
OTHER NOTES: In Ft. Worth, Charean Williams examined
the image of the Mavericks and wrote that "the losingest pro
sports franchise of the decade has become a running joke" in
Dallas, and that things have gotten "so bad" the city's Four
Day Weekend Comedy Troup "has not done a comedy spoof" on
the team in two years. Mavericks G Steve Nash: "Why should
the fans have faith in us? We haven't won in 10 years.
It's been a perpetual cycle of inadequacy" (STAR-TELEGRAM,
12/19)....In Toronto, Stephen Brunt profiled new Argos Owner
Sherwood Schwarz and wrote that the appeal of CFL teams to
potential buyers includes "cheap entry into the sports biz,
the belief that things can only get better, and for the
Americans, a tax loophole that allows losses [in Canada] to
be written off against profits" (GLOBE & MAIL, 12/18).
