Peter Gammons is "renegotiating his contract with ESPN
that might include" writing an MLB notes column for ESPN
Magazine and ESPN.com, as well as regular TV studio
appearances, according to Howard Manly of the BOSTON GLOBE.
An ESPN spokesperson said talks are continuing about an
expanded role for Gammons at ESPN, but that "nothing has
been finalized." Gammons began his career at the Boston
Globe in '69 and has had two stints at SI. He joined ESPN
in '88, while continuing to write for the Globe. Gammons
has written the Globe's Sunday notes column since '90. It
"remains unclear" how often Gammons will appear in the Globe
with a new ESPN deal. The Globe's Assistant Managing Editor
Don Skwar said "we are trying to keep him in some regular
capacity" (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/17). USA TODAY reports that
ESPN would give Gammons his own Web site "but prohibit the
Globe from running his notes column in its online edition"
(USA TODAY, 12/17). In Boston, Jim Baker reports that
Gammons gets his "own Web site in a new five-year deal" with
Disney and the deal "clouds his future at the paper" (BOSTON
HERALD, 12/17). On the Globe's Web site, it notes that
Gammons "has signed a new contract with ESPN that forbids
his work from appearing on any Website except their own.
Under his contract, he will continue to appear on ESPN's TV
station, write for their magazine, and write a column every
other week for their Website. The status of his Globe
column, which has stopped for now, is still up in the air.
If his work starts running in the print Globe or on the
Globe Online ... we'll let you know right away" (THE DAILY).
