alternative black uniforms a "handful of times," but not
during home games at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA coach Steve
Lavin, on criticism of the alternative unis that were
introduced last year: "I appreciate the traditionalist's
point of view as much as anybody. ... But if we did not have
an alternative third uniform, that puts us at a distinct
disadvantage with the other elite programs." The AP's Jim
O'Connell noted that uniform "colors and designs play a role
in recruiting since dark colors have become popular with
players" (AP, 12/12)....The USPS "unveiled a commemorative
stamp honoring" the 49ers as the NFL's "team of the 80s."
The stamp, which features WR Jerry Rice, will be "officially

EXAMINER, 12/13)....The Mavericks are using their former
player and current Suns G Jason Kidd's "name and picture" to

Mavs: "All the negative feelings have run their course for
me, and it seems like they have run their course for them,
too. I've got no problem with them using me in ads. I'm
happy I can do my part to maybe bring some more fans to
games here" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 12/12).
