COULD ERVING'S FUTURE WEAVE THROUGH THE WORLD WIDE WEB?

RDV Sports VP Julius Erving tells Lacy Banks of the
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES that he is in the final year of a three-
year contract with RDV Sports and is "discussing the
possibility" of re-signing beyond this season. As far as
his "future vocational aspirations" beyond his tenure with
the Magic, Erving said, "I've been evaluating a lot of
Internet-related proposals, and the process is very
enlightening. ... I'm pretty comfortable being a corporate
VP here. ... I don't have an itch [to leave]." Banks asked
Erving if he has his sights set on team ownership or
becoming NBA Commissioner: "The commissioner's office would
not be [an option], and owning a team would not be. Neither
is particularly appealing to me" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 12/14).
TRAVELING DOWN THE RIGHT HIGHWAY? In Chicago, Fred
Mitchell writes under the header, "Magic, Dr. J Question
Route NBA Is Following." Erving, on the "evolution of the
game": "There is probably more emphasis on entertainment
than on work ethic and fundamentals and team play and
chemistry." More Erving, on whether media coverage
"influences more selfish play": "I think the telemarketing
and the media interpretation have a lot to do with where the
emphasis goes." Magic Johnson said of some of today's
players, "What disturbs me is guys who don't care about the
game. We want all the money. OK, you have the money, now
take care of business" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 12/14).
