IS BOXING TOO MUCH FOR TRUMP? After the death of boxer
Stephan Johnson, George Vecsey asked Donald Trump if he had
"any second thoughts about being in the boxing business?"
Trump: "You have to understand that we do not sanction the
fights. That is done by the New Jersey State Athletic
Control Commission. All we are is the venue -- and fighting
is popular. Every fight sells out. We have other things
like gymnastics; they don't sell out" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/12).
DRIVING ON THE RIGHT PATH: Team Owner Joe Gibbs, on
NASCAR: "It hasn't peaked yet. To start with, this sport is
built around something that everyone knows something about -
- cars. People love cars. People love our drivers. They
are good guys. They present themselves well with the fans
and the sponsors. Our guys don't pull some of the other
stuff you see in other sports. We wouldn't let them get
away with it if they did. There's too much at stake. All
of the drivers have a morals clause in their contracts"
(BOSTON GLOBE, 12/11). In Richmond, Paul Woody wrote that
with NASCAR's new TV deal, "perhaps it's time" NASCAR
drivers formed a union. But Woody added, "In a sport based
on independence and ingenuity, a union probably would be
difficult to sell" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 12/12).
