FINANCE NOTES: VENATOR GROUP SHOWS THIRD-QUARTER PROFIT

          Venator Group reported a fiscal third-quarter net
     income of $7M, or $0.05 a diluted share, up from a loss of
     $155M, or $1.14 a share, the previous year due to stronger
     sales of its athletic clothes and shoes.  Sales rose 5% to
     $1.18B.  The company's profit for the quarter ended October
     30 was in line with analysts' estimates (WALL STREET
     JOURNAL, 11/19)....Kaepa Founder Tom Adams has started San
     Antonio-based In-Stride Inc., which "plans to tackle niche
     shoe markets with specialty shoes for cheerleaders, double-
     laced retro sneakers, and a new, patented athletic shoe"
     (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 11/19)....Apparel maker Warnaco
     Group reached a deal to acquire Authentic Fitness Corp. for
     around $414M and the assumption of about $120M in debt,
     slightly more than its original bid (WALL STREET JOURNAL,
     11/17)....StairMaster will acquire Quinton Fitness, a
     subsidiary of Quinton Instrument Company.  Quinton's fitness
     and medical treadmill support personnel will be incorporated
     into WA-based StairMaster's organization (StairMaster).
