AFTER LOSING NASCAR, TNN MUST TURN TO NEW PROGRAMMING

TNN "faces tough negotiations with cable systems and
advertisers now that it has lost" NASCAR TV rights,
according to Mollenkamp & Pinkston in the Southeast edition
of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. TNN is now "under pressure to
come up with a new lineup of shows to convince cable systems
and advertisers to pay the same rates they did when NASCAR
events were part of the package." Revenue generated by
companies advertising during NASCAR races could "also be at
risk." TNN parent CBS "wasted little time in warning
investors" in its third-quarter report that unless NASCAR
races could be replaced with events "generating similar
revenue, revenue growth at CBS's cable properties could be
'adversely affected.'" TNN execs say the money earmarked
for the NASCAR deal can be "used to buy new original
programming or syndicated shows." The network is "trying to
move away from country-music programming," and recent
additions include the dirt-track World of Outlaws series and
a college bowling tournament (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/17).
