COLLEGIATE LICENSING COMPANY NIXES HEISMAN PARODY T-SHIRT

The CLC has "notified" a bookstore located "across the
street" from the Univ. of FL that the image on the T-shirt
which parodies the Heisman Trophy and disparages FL State
Univ. WR Peter Warrick "bore too close a likeness to the
actual" trophy, "violating the trademark" of the Downtown
Athletic Club, according to Beth Kassab of the ST.
PETERSBURG TIMES. The T-shirt depicts Warrick, who was
recently arrested for "taking more than" $400 worth of
merchandise from a Dillard's department store and "paying
about" $20, as the "1999 Heistman" winner and, in a "play on
Warrick's first comments after the investigation became
public," reads, "It's not like he shot the president." The
$16.99 shirt was "pulled from" the bookstore's shelves after
"about a week's sales." Smack Apparel Owner Wayne Curtiss,
whose company made the shirts, "got written legal warnings"
from the CLC to stop printing them (ST. PETE TIMES, 11/17).
