Attorney Miles Prentice, whose bid for the Royals was
rejected by MLB, said yesterday that he is "resubmitting his
proposal" to buy the team, according to Steve Rock of the
K.C. STAR. Prentice, who was joined at the press conference
by members of his investment group, said, "I am doing it in
part to act as the conscience of the process, to make sure
someone doesn't try to come in and lowball the bid. I want
to make sure nobody steals this team." But MLB Exec Dir of
PR Rich Levin said after Prentice's new bid: "A week ago, we
delivered a message to Miles. I don't think anything has
changed." Prentice said that he "couldn't promise radical
changes in his group," but added that he may "selectively
recruit" new investors and allow his bid to "inch past" the
$75M minimum. So far, roughly 90% of his initial investors
are "still on board" and others "were still considering"
whether to rejoin the group (K.C. STAR, 11/16). Prentice,
asked whether he plans to take any legal action against MLB
after his lengthy pursuit for league approval, said, "Well,
now, you know how I dislike lawyers" (K.C. STAR, 11/16).
SEEKING ANSWERS: In K.C, Jeffrey Flanagan writes that
by resubmitting his bid, Prentice "is hoping to flush out
some answers about why [MLB] doesn't want him. ... Like any
good lawyer, Prentice knows that the longer he keeps someone
on the witness stand, the better the chances are that the
witness will crack under questioning" (K.C. STAR, 11/16).
Also in K.C., Chris Lester has "no problem" with the
league's rejection of Prentice's initial bid, but writes
that MLB "won no style points, again, in the wimpy way it
delivered the news" (K.C. STAR, 11/16). But columnist Jason
Whitlock likens Prentice to a "jilted lover," who is
"embarrassed, confused and angry," and writes that he should
"get out of the way or get run over." Whitlock backs
Royals CEO David Glass as a new owner (K.C. STAR, 11/16).
