NAMES IN THE NEWS

          Last week's "mediation session" at Federal Court in DC
     "didn't resolve a breach-of-contract lawsuit" that MARCUS
     ALLEN and RONNIE LOTT filed against the NFLPA "over the
     players' right to promote blowout Super Bowl parties" via
     their company, Super Party Inc. (see THE DAILY, 11/11). 
     NFLPA Exec Dir GENE UPSHAW said that a jury "will likely
     resolve the matter" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/13)....Padres Owner
     JOHN MOORES and his wife BECKY contributed $11.4M to S.D.
     State Univ.'s athletic department.  This latest contribution
     "will expand existing plans for a new building" to include
     administrative offices and an Aztecs Hall of Fame.  The
     Moores "have now given" the university's athletic department
     $28.6M (S.D. UNION TRIBUNE, 11/12)....The fourth O'Hara
     Invitational Basketball Tournament held this weekend and
     next in Irvington, N.Y. will "commemorate" former ABC Sports
     exec JACK O'HARA, his wife JANET and daughter CAITLIN, all
     of whom died on TWA Flight 800 in July '96.  The event
     includes more than 400 boys and girls on 36 teams playing
     more than 65 games and is "supported" by the NHL, Coca-Cola,
     CBS Sports, ABC Sports, MLB, NBC Sports, HBO Sports, Turner
     Sports and others (N.Y. TIMES, 11/14)....Heat President PAT
     RILEY "will serve" as the grand marshal of the Orange Bowl
     Parade on New Year's Eve (SUN-SENTINEL, 11/14)....The N.Y.
     TIMES previewed upcoming sports films around the Holiday
     season.  OLIVER STONE'S "ANY GIVEN SUNDAY" was profiled by
     Bruce Newman, while Rick Lyman reports that "THE HURRICANE,"
     starring DENZEL WASHINGTON as boxer RUBIN CARTER, is
     "frequently mentioned on the short list of films most likely
     to draw major Oscar nominations" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/14).
