COULD POLITICS DELAY HOUSTON'S 2002 NFL START-UP DATE?

          A dispute between Houston Mayor Lee Brown and Harris
     County Judge Robert Eckels is "threatening to jeopardize the
     2002 start-up date" for Houston's NFL expansion franchise,
     according to John McClain of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE.  The NFL
     is "concerned" that Brown is "seeking revenge" against
     Eckels and IHL Aeros Owner Chuck Watson -- Bob McNair's
     partner in the NFL venture --  "for campaigning against" the
     failed November 2 arena referendum.  Eckels and Brown still
     must work on sports projects in Houston and McClain cites
     sources as saying that the NFL is "worried" about the team
     "getting caught in the middle" of any dispute.  Two league
     sources said that Commissioner Paul Tagliabue is "keeping a
     close eye" on the situation (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 11/12).
