TORONTO 2008 COMMITTEE PRESENTS MASTER PLAN TO LURE GAMES

Toronto 2008 Olympic bid committee officials "unveiled
their master plans yesterday with bold promises of no 'white
elephant' stadiums and predictions of jobs, massive tax
revenues" and C$6B in economic benefits, according to James
Christie of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. But Christie writes
that it's the "softer human values -- an athlete-friendly
Games, remediating polluted lands and water and complete
access for the disabled -- that might lift Toronto's bid
over those of a dozen other candidate cities seeking the
2008 Olympic Games." TO-Bid CEO John Bitove: "Any city can
build the stadiums and pools. This is a plan that maximizes
community benefits." Twenty-eight of the proposed Games
venues are regional, "within an hour's drive of the
athlete's village on the East Toronto waterfront." Another
27 venues are within the city's borders. The price tag for
the Olympic venues is "within" the committee's C$687M
capital cost budget (GLOBE & MAIL, 11/10).
