In Toronto, Marty York cited sources saying that CFL
Commissioner John Tory will announce his resignation during
Grey Cup week. League President Jeff Giles "is hoping to
succeed Tory, but there's no guarantee that will happen," as
York wrote that Giles has "his detractors at the ownership
level" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 11/9)....In what MLS
Commissioner Don Garber called "an enormously important
signing," MLS yesterday introduced German star Lothar
Matthaeus to the U.S. media at an event at ESPNZone in Times
Square (Bergen RECORD, 11/10). Matthaeus will play for the
league's "worst team," the MetroStars, and MLS sees him as
"providing the kind of positive publicity Pele did when he
joined" the NASL's Cosmos in the '70s. With Matthaeus, MLS'
coverage in Germany will increase and "more games will be
shown on TV overseas. Matthaeus will also talk about MLS
games for a German cable network (USA TODAY, 11/10).
...Meanwhile, MLS will lose the Revolution's leading goal
scorer, as Joe-Max Moore has signed a contract with Everton
of the English Premier League (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/10).
