The two towers at the Steelers' new stadium will be
about 90 feet in height instead of 165 feet as originally
planned. The team "had considered putting offices,
restaurants and shops inside the towers, with solid walls on
the outside, but instead will go with a more modest plan."
Planning Commission Chair Tom Armstrong "applauded the
scaled-down design" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 11/10).
VIKINGS: Because of "operator error" that resulted in a
loud noise during a key play of Monday night's Cowboys-
Vikings game, the Vikings have "decided to end the air burst
explosion that accompanied the fireworks" after a TD by the
team. The operator responsible for Monday's burst will "not
be replaced" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 11/10). Vikings Owner
Red McCombs met with Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton
and City Council President Jackie Cherryhomes for 90 minutes
yesterday to discuss a new stadium. Cherryhomes said that
she "told McCombs that any Vikings stadium effort must be
linked to a Twins stadium resolution" (STAR TRIBUNE, 11/10).
COLANGELO'S SUPPORT: Suns Chair and D'Backs Managing
General Partner Jerry Colangelo has "agreed to serve on a
task force that will work" on a stadium for the NFL
Cardinals in Phoenix (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 11/10).
PACKERS SAY TIME IS SHORT: Packers President Bob Harlan
said Sunday that the team either needs to be in a new
stadium or playing in a "renovated" Lambeau Field by 2003 in
order "to remain financially competitive" in the NFL.
Harlan: "If we're not, we've slipped from ninth to 15th in
total revenue. We know by 2003 we'll probably be 32nd."
Harlan "hopes to put options before" the team's BOD before
the end of the year (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 11/9).
