HBO premiers its hour-long documentary, "Howard Cosell:
Telling It Like It Is," on Monday at 8:00pm ET, and in N.Y.,
Richard Sandomir writes, "HBO succeeds in chronicling the
scope of Cosell's career, and the use of archival radio,
video and film material is enriching" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/29).
In Detroit, Steve Crowe: "You've never seen Cosell explored
as thoughtfully or fully. ... It's also the fairly told
story of an acutely oversensitive egomaniac with a mean
streak" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/29). In Baltimore, Milton
Kent calls it a "largely terrific documentary" (Baltimore
SUN, 10/29). The CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR's Parney, Mason
& Bandrapalli calls it "fun-filled" (CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
MONITOR, 10/29). In Minneapolis, Judd Zulgad: "The hour-
long show does an excellent job of presenting an even-handed
look at Cosell's life, and features interviews with those
who liked the broadcaster, and those whom he alienated. The
access ABC gave HBO to its video archives is reason alone to
watch" (STAR TRIBUNE, 10/29). In Chicago, John Jackson:
"HBO does its usual outstanding job, letting the people who
knew Cosell best tell the story" (SUN-TIMES, 10/29). But in
Cincinnati, John Fay calls it "worth watching," but "not
great by HBO standards" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 10/29).
