VIABILITY REPORT ON A CANADIAN PRO SOCCER LEAGUE DELAYED

A "feasibility study" for a possible Canadian pro
soccer league conducted by KPMG's Toronto office has been
pushed back until February 2000, according to Dan Barnes of
the EDMONTON JOURNAL. Barnes cited CSA sources who said
that KPMG "may have discovered too many obstacles" to launch
a pro league, as "good news doesn't wait three months."
Barnes added that "maybe the only way" to establish such a
league is "with outside help from a major corporation" like
IMG, which "could easily afford the start-up costs of a
small league." Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) President
Jim Fleming said a 2001 start date is still possible. But
NPSL Edmonton Drillers Owner Wojtek Wojcicki said, "If it's
     2005, I'm fine with that. If it's an A-league solution, I'm
fine with that. If MLS wants to come in and cut its
franchise fee, I'm OK with that. Maybe that's the answer,
that we do have a Canadian division of an established
league. Why re-invent the wheel unless you can do much
better? All these possibilities exist" (E. JOURNAL, 10/26).
