NHL LEAGUE NOTES

In Detroit, Nicholas Cotsonika reports that in response
to last year's "on-ice racial incidents," the NHL is
"conducting sensitivity training" for each of its teams,
with the Red Wings going "through their session" yesterday.
The players "listened to speakers" and watched a 45-minute
video (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/26)....Stars RW Brett Hull, on
the state of the NHL: "I don't think it is fun for anybody.
The game has changed. It used to be great, wide open. I
don't think we have scored more than two goals, except for
(three) times" (TORONTO SUN, 10/26)....In CA, Cammy Clark
noted that despite having "two of the top stars" in the NHL
in LW Paul Kariya and RW Teemu Selanne, the Mighty Ducks
drew an average attendance of only 12,438 during their last
five-game road trip, "slightly more than" 70% capacity.
Kariya: "I don't think it's the type of sport that people
come to see individual players. It's more like they come
because there's a really big rivalry, like when L.A. comes
to The Pond" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 10/23).
