NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who attended Sunday's
Browns-Rams game at the Trans World Dome (TWD), appeared on
CBS' "The NFL Today" and said of instant replay: "Replay, I
think, is a positive. ... I think you can see in almost
every game there are plays where having that insurance
policy upstairs is a positive thing" ("The NFL Today,"
10/24). CBS SportsLine's Len Pasquarelli spoke with NFL
execs and wrote, "Clearly, the system hasn't worked nearly
as well as its supporters hoped it would. And the incidents
of gaffes by the on-field officials and those in the replay
booth could well jeopardize the system for the future" (CBS
SportsLine, 10/22). Tagliabue's visit to St. Louis was his
first since the Rams moved in '95 (POST-DISPATCH, 10/25).
MARTIN ON TOUR: By finishing in the top 15 on the Nike
Tour money list, Casey Martin secured a PGA Tour card for
next season. In N.Y., Bill Fields wrote that if the PGA
Tour "wins its appeal" against Martin for his right to use a
golf cart in competition, it "would be up to the [PGA] Tour
policy board to decide whether to make an exception in
Martin's case, something it has not chosen to do before."
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem: "Let's see what the court
does. And then we'll talk about that" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/24).
Martin's attorney, William Wiswall, said that Martin "would
appeal the case to the Supreme Court, if necessary." Davis:
"If that step is needed, Wiswall said he is confident he
could obtain an injunction that would allow Martin to
continue riding" (WASH. TIMES, 10/25). Tiger Woods, on
Martin being allowed an exception to ride a cart: "That
would be a very sympathetic thing for the PGA Tour to do.
It would make them look very good" (FL TIMES-UNION, 10/23).
MLB TO RETURN TO HAVANA NEXT SEASON? MLBPA exec Tony
Bernazard said that "big-league baseball probably will
return" to Havana, Cuba, next year. Bernazard: "Not during
the regular season, but in spring training. Several teams
are interested" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 10/25).
