GETTING ITS GAME ON: DC/BALTIMORE OLYMPIC BID HAS RAISED $6M

Organizers for the Washington-Baltimore bid for the
2012 Summer Games have raised $6M, over half the amount it
needs for the first phase of the process, "from some of the
region's largest corporations," according to Scott Wilson of
the WASHINGTON POST. The fund-raising has "accelerated"
recently with contributions from Marriott Int'l, Discovery
Communications and several other major companies. The bid
group, called the Washington Baltimore Regional 2012
Coalition, raised $1M in July alone toward its $10M goal.
Meanwhile, coalition officials have been "stepping up
community outreach efforts to generate support for the
Olympic movement and bidding for other sporting contests to
show that the region has what it takes to host world-class
events." Bids are due December 2000 (WASH. POST, 10/21).
