PATRIOTS AND NFL BOTH WARN ACCESS ROAD KEY TO STADIUM DEAL

The Patriots, NFL and Boston business execs "warned"
that "without a new access road," the team's proposed $250M
stadium "will not be built" in Foxboro, according to Meg
Vaillancourt in a front-page report in the BOSTON GLOBE.
The access road, which would aid luxury suite holders and
local residents, is "crucial to marketing and financing the
project," and a vote by Foxboro residents on a proposed
zoning change "to allow construction" of the access road
"may come as early as next month." Vaillancourt adds, "To
build the road, [Foxboro] must first change the town's
zoning code, a move that requires a two-thirds vote."
Patriots COO Andrew Wasynczuk: "We don't want to draw a line
in the sand, but we need to clear up a misperception that we
can somehow build the stadium without this access road.
That's just not the case. Without this road, the new
stadium project cannot and will not go forward." NFL
VP/League Development Roger Goodell: "The NFL's financing is
contingent upon the access road." Boston attorney Paul
Kirk, who "led the effort to keep" the Patriots in MA:
"Without the access road, you might as well put out a
tombstone over the whole deal" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/15).
