WILL BIDDERS BE FLYING COACH AFTER PURCHASE OF JETS?

The prospectus written for the sale of the Jets shows
that the team "lost" $8M for the year ended February '98
and has "produced modest returns" by NFL standards,
according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES, who writes
that the prospectus indicates the team "lacks the robust
stadium revenues that some of the league's most valuable
franchises enjoy." The Jets earned $24.3M last season, but
the figure was "inflated by a one-time payment" of $16.8M
for each team's share of the Browns' franchise fee. For
this season, the Jets "project a net profit" of $5.4M.
Though a $500M sale price has been suggested, Sandomir
writes that the detailed figures in the prospectus "raise
significant questions about the real market value of the
team." Goldman, Sachs & Co. has already "reduced" the
number of potential buyers for the Jets to between six and
eight, and two of the "suitors" have said privately that the
"bottom-line reality contained in the prospectus does not
     support a $500 million bid" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/14).
