SEATTLE'S WNBA TEAM MOVES FORWARD DESPITE RENT INCREASE

Officials for Seattle's WNBA team called the Seattle
City Council's proposal to charge the team $20,000 a season
to play at KeyArena "unethical and unfair," but said they
will accept the new conditions and submit it for league
approval, according to Holly Cain of the SEATTLE POST-
INTELLIGENCER. Seattle's Senior Dir of Operations Karen
Bryant: "We don't know yet if this will be a deal-breaker
for the WNBA. We will obviously lobby the league to accept
it." The WNBA team "must pay" $100,000 to the city as part
of its KeyArena lease before the season begins, but the team
can "recoup" $80,000 of that money if it plays all its
scheduled games at the arena (SEATTLE P-I, 10/13). In
Seattle, Blaine Newnham, on the city's action: "Good for
them. ... Finally, the team, not the city, got the short end
of the deal. How many times in how many cities have we seen
it go the other way?" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/12).
