The Redskins announced a new parking plan in an effort
to "avert the gridlock" that occurred during the team's
season opener on September 12, according to David Nakamura
of the WASHINGTON POST. Fans without parking permits will
be directed to park at US Airways Arena for $15 and then
take shuttle buses to the stadium. Also, "dozens of new
road signs will direct those with permits along redesigned
routes to get them into parking spaces more quickly." Team
Owner Daniel Snyder spent $60,000 to create an extra
perimeter road around the stadium "to accelerate traffic
flow." All lots will also open four hours before kickoff
(WASHINGTON POST, 9/29). The arena parking is only about a
mile away from Redskins Stadium (WASHINGTON TIMES, 9/28).
THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED: In a front-page feature in
today's WASHINGTON POST, Alan Sipress examines traffic flow
around other NFL stadiums under the header, "Around the NFL,
Gridlock Not A Given: Transit -- and Tailgating -- Help
Other Cities Avoid Snarls." Sipress offers the Redskins
some ideas to relieve the traffic flow: "Savvier management
of parking, promotion of transit and charter bus service,
and encouragement of pregame and postgame tailgating and
other entertainment to spread the rush -- although the last
initiative may be a tough sell for buttoned-down, booked-up
Washingtonians" (WASHINGTON POST, 9/29).
