MAYOR MENINO WANTS LEADERS TO SEE THE LIGHT OF NEW FENWAY

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino yesterday "rejected" an
estimated $500M renovation plan for Fenway Park and "urged
lawmakers to back" the $545M new ballpark project proposed
by the Red Sox, according to Meg Vaillancourt of the BOSTON
GLOBE. Menino, referring to a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey
conducted at no cost for the city (see THE DAILY, 9/28):
"This review makes it clear that we need a new ballpark
because the problems associated with trying to renovate --
and the costs of doing so -- are just too great." Save
Fenway Park proponents are "not giving up," and some
"skeptics note that Menino was a strong proponent of a new
ballpark long before the study was released." But both the
mayor and Pricewaterhouse officials "vehemently denied the
review was biased" toward a new park (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/29).
