Co. will sit back and let as many as 60 jobs be eliminated"

CART/IRL: BRIDGE NEWS' Jennifer Allen reported that
CART stock closed at 27 1/8 yesterday, down 3 1/8, after IRL
Founder Tony George said that "attempts to reunite CART and
the IRL failed" (BRIDGE NEWS, 9/27). USA TODAY's Steve
Ballard, on the CART-IRL talks: "It's possible that CART's
eagerness to deal actually served to strengthen George's
resolve to stay the course. Nothing like seeing the
opposition wave a white flag to make you feel like you're
winning the battle" (USA TODAY, 9/28). In Toronto, Dan
Proudfoot writes that this "wasn't the first time" George
"had declared his continuing independence. ... This time,
CART team owners fear he may really mean it" (T. SUN, 9/28).
