NAMES IN THE NEWS

          The showshoe hare, coyote and bear that will serve as
     the mascots of the 2002 Winter Olympics were named POWDER,
     COPPER and COAL, respectively.  The names, chosen in a
     national contest, "figure prominently in Utah history.  Coal
     and copper reflect mining heritage.  powder refers to the
     light snow that makes skiing [in UT] so good" (SALT LAKE
     TRIBUNE, 9/26)....Giants DB JASON SEHORN and RB TIKI BARBER
     taped an appearance for CBS's "Guiding Light" last week. 
     The two play themselves ("Sports Tonight," CNN/SI, 9/24).
     ...DENNIS RODMAN appeared on Friday's "Tonight Show" with
     Jay Leno to promote his new film, "Simon Sez."  TV actress
     KIM RAVER followed Rodman as a guest and said to him, "You
     know, I wanted to call you and make sure we weren't wearing
     the same thing.  But you're wearing pants.  I thought you'd
     be wearing a dress" ("Tonight Show," 9/24).  In reviewing
     "Simon Sez," the N.Y. TIMES' Lawrence Van Gelder called
     Rodman "inescapably watchable" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/25).  Rodman
     will start filming "CUTAWAY" next month in Miami and will
     play a drug dealer "pursued by" STEPHEN BALDWIN and TOM
     BERENGER (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/27)....VANESSA WILLIAMS and
     Lakers F RICK FOX "tied the knot in the Caribbean this
     summer" and went public yesterday with their marriage (N.Y.
     POST, 9/25)....Starzz G CHANTEL TREMITIERE has a recording
     deal "in the works" with PERCY "MASTER P" MILLER (SALT LAKE
     TRIBUNE, 9/26)....An album recorded by members of the
     PREDATORS, called "CHECK PLEASE," is coming out next month. 
     Part of the album's proceeds will go to the Predators
     Foundation (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 9/26)....The ANDRE AGASSI
     CHARITABLE FOUNDATION raised $3.9M at this weekend's fifth
     annual Grand Slam for Children benefiting at-risk youth
     organizations in southern NV (AACF).
