homes. For cable, "Cov. Area" = % of homes tuned in to that
program in that network's universe of subscribers.
RATINGS NOTES: CBS' single-game opening-week coverage
of the NFL was up 35% over last year's opening-week
doubleheader, which earned an 8.2/21 (CBS). Fox's NFL
doubleheader action averaged a 9.9/22, which is even with
last year's single-game opener (Fox)....CBS SportsLine's Bob
Keisser reports that "Fox NFL Sunday" pregame show earned a
4.6 rating, while CBS' "The NFL Today" earned a 3.2 and
ESPN's "NFL GameDay" earned a 2.1. The numbers "translate
into about" 9 million homes. Keisser: "If this isn't proof
of the viability of an all-NFL cable channel, then nothing
else is. All three pregame shows were credible" (CBS
SportsLine, 9/17). Meanwhile, in Long Beach, Keisser
reports that the "notion" that NFL ratings are "in a
decline" in L.A. is "just not true." Keisser notes that the
combined rating for the early game last Sunday on Fox and
CBS was a 16.6/44, meaning that 44% of all TVs in use were
watching the NFL (Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM, 9/17). In
Houston, David Barron compares week-one NFL ratings in L.A.
and Houston (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/17).
