NAMES IN THE NEWS

          More than a third of those surveyed in a WALL STREET
     JOURNAL/NBC News poll say MICHAEL JORDAN is "the century's
     greatest male athlete."  Jordan scored "well with every
     conceivable group" and scored "even higher among Hispanics
     than among African Americans" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/16). 
     ..Jordan shot a 13-over-par 84 as an amateur at the Chicago
     Open, 15 strokes behind the leader.  Jordan: "Today, I found
     out I was out of my league."  When asked if he would play in
     more tournaments, Jordan replied: "Eventually.  But I have
     to take small steps. I'm am not ready to play every week"
     (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 9/16).  In N.Y., Neal Travis reported that
     Foxwoods casino in CT has "scored in luring" Jordan to the
     casino on September 26.  Jordan "will probably command more
     than $100,000 for the appearance" (N.Y. POST, 9/15).  
          Fox has OK'd the production of a MUHAMMAD ALI biopic,
     to be produced by ROBERT DENIRO's Tribeca Productions and
     Fox TV Studios Pictures (DAILY VARIETY, 9/16)....In Boston,
     U.S. and Int'l diplomats yesterday "took turns praising"
     REEBOK at a business and human rights forum, saying Reebok
     is a "shining example of how corporations can use their
     clout to improve working conditions in developing countries"
     (BOSTON HERALD, 9/16)....CAROL ALT, on the Howard Stern
     show, defending boyfriend Senators C ALEXEI YASHIN for
     holding out: "He needs to take care of me" (CAL. SUN, 9/16).
