SHOULD ALCOHOL SPONSOR COLLEGE ATHLETICS PROGRAMS?

Though the NCAA bans beer ads at its championship
events, the Big 12 allows each school to decide "whether to
accept alcohol advertising," according to Kent Pulliam of
the K.C. STAR. Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg: "Not that
we would establish a conference policy, but we do have to
analyze our business relationship to make sure there is no
double standard. I don't think it has come to the point of
saying that our institutions need to have a uniform policy
in accepting beer advertising." KS Univ. doesn't accept
corporate sponsorships from beer companies because "it sends
a mixed message to student athletes." KS St. Univ. AD Max
Urick, whose school accepts alcohol ads: "On the surface it
appears to be a mixed message. If students are drinking
alcohol, are they drinking because we have a sign at the
stadium that says a certain kind of beer?" Univ. of MO AD
Mike Alden, whose school accepts beer advertising: "I don't
know if there has ever been a correlation between a sign and
a call to active drinking" (K.C. STAR, 9/12).
