The NHL has sent a "cease-and-desist letter" to Sabres
fan Jeffrey Spring for running a Web site devoted to the
controversial Stanley Cup-winning goal made by Stars RW
Brett Hull, according to Dave Feschuk of the NATIONAL POST.
The NHL says the site, located at www.nogoal.com and which
featured "No Goal" T-shirts and caps, would "immeasurably
damage the value of the [properties] because of the global
exposure a product enjoys when placed on the Internet."
Spring has removed the merchandise and is now consulting an
attorney. Meanwhile, the NHL has sent an additional letter
demanding Spring "stop using NHL copyrighted images" on the
site. Spring: "They were trying to tell me I couldn't have
the picture of Hull in the crease on my site. ... That
picture is all over the world" (NATIONAL POST, 9/15).
FLYIN' HIGH: In Philadelphia, Tim Panaccio wrote that
the Flyers' Web site "has blossomed into one of the NHL's
best with an array of options to browse." The club plans to
add its "entire yearbook" and all-time statistics, along
with an online merchandise store "in the near future." The
site currently averages 1.85 million views a month, with the
average visit lasting 30 minutes (PHILA. INQUIRER, 9/12).
