SOCCER: In Dallas, Steve Davis writes that MLS execs
"seem to support making the controversial" overtime shootout
"part of history," as 29.6% of games have gone into a
shootout this season, "a trend that is hastening the
debate." Davis also reports that the 23,500-seat Crew
Stadium was "almost an immediate sell-out" for the Nike U.S.
Women's Cup match on October 3, while 24,000 tickets have
been sold for the October 7 game at Arrowhead Stadium in
Kansas City and 28,000 for the October 10 match at Papa
John's Stadium in Louisville (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/15).
BASEBALL: The AP's Ronald Blum reports, "Baseball
officials will examine the idea of a World Cup more closely
in the next two months before deciding whether to go on with
a tournament" (AP, 9/15)....MLB HOFer Frank Robinson, on NL
President Len Coleman's impending resignation: "Len truly
fought and tried to help and improve everybody else's
position except his own. For that he's paid a price. He's
lost his job" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 9/15).
MORE NOTES: The Cowboys and Falcons will play in Tokyo
next August in the 35th American Bowl game, the actual date
of which is yet to be determined (NFL)....The PGA of America
has "changed the dates" of the Grand Slam of Golf, from
November 16-17 to November 23-24, in order to "ensure Tiger
Woods could play in the tournament for this year's major
championship winners" (TORONTO SUN, 9/15).
