LEAGUE NOTES

          In N.Y., Murray Chass reported that MLB umpires
     "opposed" to MLBUA General Counsel Richie Phillips'
     leadership "agreed Friday to form a new union and seek
     certification to represent all umpires" (N.Y. TIMES,
     9/11)....In N.Y., Tom Robbins reports that the MLBPA has
     "angered some officials" by holding its annual "players
     Choice Awards" at the non-union Hard Rock Hotel.  MLBPA
     Associate General Counsel Gene Orza said union hotels were
     booked: "We went to 15 hotels, and none had any use for us"
     (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/13)....In New Orleans, Mary Judice
     examined NFL players' money-management skills in a three-
     part feature and wrote that the NFL has come up with an
     "education program to help players learn to save and invest
     wisely during their playing years."  Several rookies 
     attended part of a six-week class taught by Tulane Univ.
     professor Peter Ricchiuti, which was "mandated last year" by
     the NFL for rookies (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 9/12).
