FRANCHISE NOTES

In Philadelphia, Edward Moran writes that of the 11,133
paid attendance for yesterday's Astros-Phillies game, "only"
5,100 showed up, marking the Phillies' smallest crowd this
season. The game was delayed by rain. The team has sold
around 1.9 million tickets this season, an increase of
around 100,000 over last year (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS,
9/10)....The Rockies have decided to contribute $300,000 for
construction of a light rail system in the Central Platte
Valley after the team received "intense criticism" for
initially deciding not to do so. The team had balked
because the rail would end three blocks from Coors Field
(DENVER POST, 9/10)....A Hillsborough County (FL) Circuit
judge denied a motion by the Bucs to drop a class-action
lawsuit filed by four Bucs season-ticket holders claiming
the team "unfairly and deceptively assigned season tickets"
(ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 9/10)....The Predators will allow
fans attending the December 4 game against the Red Wings to
redeem their Red Wings hat for a new Predators hat.
Predators Exec VP/Business Operations Tom Ward noted that
"much of" the Red Wings popularity in TN is the result of a
"large number" of Detroit residents who moved to the state
to take jobs at Saturn's Spring Hill plant. Ward, on
converting fans: "I don't know how successful we'll be"
(NASHVILLE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/6)....In Philadelphia, Paul
Domowitch writes that the "only question" regarding the city
landing an AFL expansion team is "whether it will be owned
by" Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie or former NFL QB Ron
Jaworski. Jaworski's group was awarded an AFL team two
months ago (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/10).
