Past LPGA Commissioners "have gotten worn down by the
constant problems of maintaining a full schedule of
tournaments and increasing revenue for the players," current
LPGA Commissioner Ty Votaw is "high voltage" and "defends
the LPGA with the ferocity of an Ohio bobcat," according to
Jerry Potter of USA TODAY. Votaw, on comments that the PGA
Tour "casts a big shadow over" the LPGA: "People have
unbelievable expectations of what the LPGA should be. They
say we're not as strong as the PGA Tour, so we're inferior.
I'm not going to run that race. The race I'm going to run is
being the best women's sports organization in the world."
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, on Votaw, who is 37: "I
think his youth is an asset. He's so young that he could be
there a long time and have a major impact on the
organization." Votaw, who believes that the LPGA has "been
overlooked" in women's athletics: "I think women's sports is
a rising tide that lifts all ships. If women's sports is
that rising tide, then the LPGA is the biggest and longest-
lasting ship in the ocean" (USA TODAY, 8/26).
