The TORONTO SUN reports that former EMI Group Owner
Charles Koppelman "reportedly has offered" $185M for the
Islanders and the club's TV package. The offer is $10M less
than what the team was sold for a year ago (TORONTO SUN,
8/24)....The NFL "has granted a request" from the Jaguars to
"extend the deadline for a" local TV blackout of Thursday's
preseason game against the Chiefs. The team now has until
8:00pm ET tonight to sell "roughly" 4,800 seats, but team
officials "aren't sure the added 24 hours will be any help"
(FL TIMES-UNION, 8/24)....The NHL Kings, which are moving
into the Staples Center this fall, have sold "only 600 news
season tickets." Kings GM Dave Taylor: "That's a challenge
here in L.A. There's a lot of competition for the sports
dollar" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 8/22)....In Ft.
Lauderdale, Alex Marvez reported that the Rams are "debating
a uniform change" for the 2000 season. The team's trademark
"curly horns would remain, but the new colors would be a
Notre Dame-style gold and navy blue" (SUN-SENTINEL, 8/22).
REAL SPORTS: Former Magic assistant coach George
Scholz's pursuit of a racial discrimination lawsuit against
the team, alleging that his termination was due to the fact
he is white, was examined on HBO's "Real Sports" by Armen
Keteyian. Scholz's original case, which began in September
'92, was dismissed after five weeks, but Keteyian reported
that the "jurors told Court TV that four out of six of them,
the necessary majority, had been ready to side with Scholz."
Scholz appealed the judge's ruling, and on March 27, 1998,
the District Court of Appeals ruled that he "deserved to
have a jury decide his case." Keteyian said that the second
trial begins next month in Orlando and that the money Scholz
is "looking to win from the Magic is going up." Scholz's
attorney Dan Broderson: "I'm talking about eight figures."
Magic execs and their attorneys "declined to be interviewed"
by Keteyian ("Real Sports," HBO, 8/23).
