COME ON FOX, LIGHT OUR FIRE: SPECULATION ON CBS' NCAA BID

P.O.V. magazine's Randall Lane was interviewed by Greg
Clarkin on CNNfn's "Biz Buzz" Friday regarding CBS' effort
to renew its agreement to carry the NCAA men's basketball
tournament. Lane, when asked if Fox's sports broadcasting
presence "lit a fire" under CBS to re-up its deal:
"Absolutely. ... CBS realizes that if they wait until this
thing goes into open bidding, they might be in trouble. The
advantage for CBS is that they're the only ones that can do
something about it now." Lane, on how the NCAA's recent
$54.5M class-action settlement with assistant basketball
coaches impacts the negotiations: "CBS can basically say,
'Hey, we'll take care of that for you.' And that's kind of
what's being thrown on the table" ("Biz Buzz," 8/20).
