IS THE NFL LOOKING FOR MOORES? PADRES OWNER BACKS ANAHEIM

Padres Owner John Moores "has approached the NFL about
returning a team to Anaheim," said a league source last
Friday, according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. TIMES. Though
Irvine Mayor Christina Shea "has promoted" part of the El
Toro Marine Base "as an ideal site," Moores "apparently has
not discussed the Irvine location with the league." NFL Dir
of Media Services Leslie Hammond: "We have had conversations
with Mr. Moores. The conversations were about Anaheim, not
Irvine." But it "was not clear whether Moores inquired
about operating an expansion team in Anaheim, luring an
existing team to relocate there or simply developing a
stadium site." Anaheim's Edison Field, which was renovated
a few years ago and reduced in size, is currently "too small
to accommodate" an NFL team. Moores was unavailable for
     comment (L.A. TIMES, 8/21).
