GART SPORTS SEES $3.5M INCREASE IN TOTAL SALES DURING 2Q

          Denver-based Gart Sports "posted" a $3.5M increase in
     total sales during the second quarter, "compared with the
     same period" a year ago, according to Guy Kelly of the ROCKY
     MOUNTAIN NEWS.  Gart Sports Chair & CEO Doug Morton said
     that the sporting-goods retailer is "well-positioned for the
     second half of the year."  Total sales for the second
     quarter of '99 were $172.6M, up from $169.1M during the same
     period a year ago.  The company reported net income of
     $500,000, or $.07 a diluted share, compared with net income
     of $2.3M, or $.29 a diluted share during the second quarter
     a year ago (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 8/21).
