STEINBRENNER TO LOWER TICKET PRICES FOR FANS IN WHEELCHAIRS

Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner "agreed yesterday" to
reduce ticket prices at Yankee Stadium for fans in
wheelchairs "by more than" 40% for the rest of the season,
according to Salvatore Arena of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS.
Steinbrenner approved the reduction "as a way to mollify the
disabled fans who sued the team and the city ... over the
scarcity and expense of wheelchair seating at games." The
move was announced by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White,
but it "does not apply" to the team's postseason games.
Wheelchair spaces with unobstructed views will now cost $29,
down from $50, while the cost of spaces with obstructed
views has been lowered from $26 to $14 and $8, depending on
the location. Also, disabled fans can now purchase tickets
on the Internet, at Yankee Clubhouse stores, through
Ticketmaster or at stadium ticket windows. The tickets were
previously only available by "special arrangement." Neither
the Yankees nor the city "admitted any wrongdoing in
agreeing to the temporary measures" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/20).
