          T'Wolves F KEVIN GARNETT "has split" from agent ERIC
     FLEISHER (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 8/18)....The Univ. of TN
     football team, last year's national champion, visited the
     White House yesterday and presented PRESIDENT CLINTON and VP
     AL GORE with ceremonial UT jerseys.  Coach PHIL FULMER
     "mistakenly referred" to Gore as the President (TENNESSEAN,
     8/18)....In Chicago, Carol Slezak profiles USFANS, a for-
     profit consumer activist organization on pro sports.  The
     company has a staff of 17 and 12,000 members.  USFans
     President FRANK STADULIS says that he "expects the number of
     members to surge to 100,000 within six months."  He is also
     "talking to Wall Street" about going public.  Stadulis: "We
     want to be the proactive arm for sports fans across the
     country. ... We want every major sports town to have a
     chapter to champion its local issues.  We'll provide the
     national backing" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/18)....Pilot Pen
     Tournament Dir ANNE WORCESTER, on "the preferred method" of
     communicating with WTA Tour players: "All the players on the
     tour carry computers.  They all have e-mail" (HARTFORD
     COURANT, 8/17)....ESPN's GARY MILLER talked with MARK
     MCGWIRE about the net's "Y2K" promo, which feature McGwire
     and conclude with ESPN's CHARLEY STEINER wearing face paint
     and saying, "Follow me.  Follow me to freedom."  Miller:
     "Would you follow Charley Steiner to freedom?"  McGwire:
     "No.  Would you?  A man like that?"  Miller: "I don't know. 
     I guess if the world was ending."  McGwire: "It depends
     where the freedom is.  He doesn't tell everybody where the
     freedom's going" ("Up Close," ESPN, 8/17).
