Brewers President & CEO Wendy Selig-Prieb, on complying
with MLB wishes and seeking minority candidates for the
team's GM and manager openings: "I feel it's the right thing
to do. I think it's not only the right thing to do, but
it's a good thing to do. Our process will be very, very
inclusive" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/17)....Twins Owner Carl Pohlad:
"The last three years, we've been working our butt off to
keep baseball in Minnesota. I keep saying to myself, `Why
do I do this?' Only for the simple reason that I can't
believe they don't want it here" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS,
8/17)....In Boston, Peter Gammons noted that the "current
owners of the Washington Capitals and Wizards," with Bob
Watson and Steve Stone, "may be willing to jump into Oakland
if Andy Dolich's group falls out (eventual destination: Las
Vegas)" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/15)....The Padres have drawn more
than 1.9 million fans to Qualcomm Stadium through 59 games
this season despite being 11 games under .500. The team is
on pace to top 2.7 million, 6% above its all-time high set
last year. In San Diego, Jeff McDonald wrote some of the
attendance bump can be attributed to the team's successful
promotions, as attendance at Padres games without giveaways
such "is far lower." Padres VP/Public Affairs Charles
Steinberg: "If a bargain is what fans seek, we're happy to
be found" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/16).
THE MARKET FORCES: Dodgers Exec VP & GM Kevin Malone,
on criticism his organization received for signing P Kevin
Brown to a $105M contract: "The market was already
established. That was the going rate. If you wanted Kevin
Brown, that's what it was going to cost you. We were
fortunate enough that we had the resources that we could
make that commitment" ("Up Close," ESPN, 8/16)
