MEDIA NOTES

TV MONITOR: Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of CNN/SI's
"Sports Tonight" led with the PGA Championship, followed by
players discussing the play-for-pay Ryder Cup controversy.
     ESPN's 11:00pm ET "SportsCenter" led with Padres-Mets,
followed by Blue Jays-Twins. FSN's 11:00pm ET edition of
"Primetime" (Fox Sports Net South) led with the PGA
Championship, followed by Tigers-Rangers (THE DAILY).
ESPN NOT AT MEDINAH DUE TO DISPUTE? ESPN wanted to
bring its "usual nacho grande golf set" to the PGA
Championship. But the CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports that PGA
broadcast partner TNT said "no," because it reportedly "did
not want ESPN in a prime spot. So ESPN was given a spot in
the hinterlands of Medinah, and ESPN, in return, said forget
about it." ESPN's Jimmy Roberts is the "only" network
personality at the event (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/13)...Because
of the "strength of the afternoon schedule," ESPN increased
its coverage of the ATP Championships Wednesday from two to
four hours (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 8/13)....In a new feature,
ESPN's "SportsCenter" has added team records to its graphics
when detailing MLB game scores (THE DAILY).
NOTES: Time Warner and Advance Publications have
"suspended plans" for a TV network for women. Execs felt
the "expense associated with the channel couldn't be
justified," given the Turner Network's plans to launch new
networks, including Turner South (WALL ST JOURNAL, 8/13).
....In Atlanta, Shelia Poole writes that "more than" 40 TV,
newspaper and magazine reporters and editors -- half from
overseas -- "are taking part in a three-day sports showcase
touting [Atlanta] as 'The Sports Capital of the World'"
(ATL. CONSTITUTION, 8/13)....Quokka Sports inked a
programming/distribution deal with Road Runner, which will
promote Quokka's content to subscribers through various
media, including Road Runner's sports site (AD AGE, 8/13).
