TORONTO CAN HOST 2008 GAMES FOR.....THREE BILLION DOLLARS!

It will cost the city of Toronto C$2.9B to host the
2008 Summer Olympics, according to Van Alphen & Byers of the
TORONTO STAR. But bid officials will introduce today a
"preliminary budget that suggests" the city could come out
with a C$100M surplus to "go along with a legacy of athletic
facilities and a rejuvenated waterfront." The surplus
"could balloon to" C$400M if "spending on venues is less"
than initial projections. A source said the Toronto 2008
budget will detail C$2B in operating costs and another
C$400-700M for new stadiums and other facilities for the
two-week event. But projections will show C$3B in revenues,
leaving a "substantial surplus" (TORONTO STAR, 8/12).
CATCHING UP WITH MITT: SLOC President & CEO Mitt Romney
said that the organizations' new deal with IMG (see THE
DAILY, 4/22) has resulted in a "pipeline" of potential
sponsors to support the 2002 Games. Romney hopes to "name
an average of two new sponsors, suppliers or contributors
monthly until Games time" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 8/12).
